The Hero’s Price
Days passed, days in which Saphyre’s heart and mind were filled with little else save thoughts of Rogan—and his attentions. Each time she closed her eyes, visions of his handsome face would appear in her mind. Each day as he disappeared into the forest to cut wood or to travel to the quarry, Saphyre’s heart ached to go with him—simply to be near him—to linger in his company. Each night as she lay in her small bed, she thought of Rogan—of his strength, of his smile, of his wit, of his kiss—and she longed for the sun to rise so she might linger in his presence again.
One morning Saphyre found herself wandering about the keep. The brothers of the keep had gone some moments previous—gone in pursuit of their daily labors. Alone and rather blithe concerning her intended tasks, Saphyre wandered from chamber to chamber, seeking further knowledge of what once had been the purpose of each chamber of the keep.
There were the stores—chambers meant to store supplies for the warriors who had long ago defended the once great edifice. There were chambers meant for respite, several of which had been since occupied by the brothers of the keep now dwelling in its bosom.
It was while thus wandering Saphyre came upon a narrow stone stairway. Curious as to its leading, she climbed the worn stone steps, mindful the narrow nature of the passage allowed only one person to easy access it. Up she climbed, until she reached the top of the stairway. She found herself stepping into a small turret—a tower room. There hung above her a large bell of iron and a rope. No doubt the keep bell once warned warriors of impending danger, and she wondered that the rope still appeared so strong and void of weathering.
“The warning bell of the keep.”
Saphyre startled at the sound of Rogan’s voice behind her, whirling about to find herself facing her heart’s desire.
“You caused my heart near to leap from my breast, Rogan!” she told him. Instantly she felt her face warm crimson, the hot blush filling her to her toes as a mischievous smile spread across his face.
“Am I that handsome then?” he inquired, still smiling.
Saphyre reined her unsettled nerves and turned her attention to the bell once more. “The rope looks fresh…not ancient and rotted as one might expect.”
“Yes,” Rogan said, moving to stand just behind her.
She gasped as she felt his hands at her waist.
“We attached it ourselves, for it is now our signal bell…as it was a warning for the warriors who once defended this keep.”
“Oh, I see,” Saphyre breathed, trembling as she felt his breath on her neck.
“It has been too many sunrises and sunsets since last I was alone with you thus, Saphyre,” he whispered.
“You mock me without mercy, sir,” Saphyre whispered.
“Mock you?” he said, taking her shoulders and turning her to face him. His frown was that of concern. “I would not mock you, Saphyre. I may toy with you…in other matters…but I would not mock you in this.
